The Customer
ABB is a pioneering technology leader that works closely with utility, industry, transportation and infrastructure customers to write the future of industrial digitalization, increasing productivity and boosting efficiency.
The Project
Asset Performance Monitoring Application
The Business Challenge
ABB needed to craft a unified and intuitive experience upgrade for existing APM (Asset Performance Management) applications. With the rapid evolution of technology in our personal lives, customers are expecting software to be modernized – easy to use, intuitive, available on any device, with little to no training required. By delivering a modernized UX, new customers will gravitate to ABB’s software suite (increased revenue), and existing customers will adopt additional features and modules (increase retention and basket size).
Our Solution
The current APM applications have a vast amount of capability but have been built in chunks resulting in a system that is under-leveraged due to low discoverability, a low understanding of the different features, and an inconsistent experience. A modernized approach is needed to address these issues and upgrade the APM user experience. Improving proposes a micro-frontend architecture that leverages the existing micro-service architecture at ABB. By using a standard browser feature to define custom elements, we will reduce the pressure of implementing new UI technology on existing teams and accelerate deployments to users.
Business Benefits
A new UI was created to host summarized data at the enterprise, site, and asset levels. At each level, components from the different services were composed together to create a coherent look-and-feel. The UI then surfaced the most important information for users and offer the ability to dig deeper for additional context and information.
Why Improving
Aside from a successful launch, Improving upskilled the existing ABB development teams in both Scrum maturity and development best practices with the three development teams working directly with the applications and services that were impacted by this project.
