Enterprise Reporting Evolution: Tableau to Power BI Migration
Overview
Westfield Insurance (Westfield) is a privately held, U.S.-based property and casualty insurer that was founded in 1848. Headquartered in Westfield Center, Ohio, it is known for its multi-line insurance offerings across personal, commercial, agribusiness, and specialty sectors. Improving has had a deep partnership with Westfield Insurance for 10 years acting as their primary Microsoft technology partner. The initiative focused on migrating their reporting infrastructure from Tableau to Microsoft’s Power BI, leveraging Microsoft Fabric. The project aimed to enhance data management and reporting efficiency. Through a collaborative effort between various offices, including Toronto and Ohio, the team successfully implemented a secure environment and streamlined Westfield’s data processes.
The Business Challenge
Facing escalating licensing costs with Tableau, Westfield opted to transition to Power BI to reduce expenses and streamline analytics across departments by leveraging their existing enterprise investment in Microsoft 365.
Our Solution
Improving approached Westfield Insurance's problem by leveraging our expertise in Microsoft technologies and data management. We implemented a secure virtual network (VNet) from Microsoft Fabric to Power BI, integrating on-prem and cloud services like Netezza and Snowflake. Our team utilized our Code Explorer AI tool to quickly analyze Tableau Prep files, enabling efficient migration and consolidation of reports. We introduced best practices for environment migration, including security persona mapping, workspace and domain mapping, and data model rationalization.
The Business Benefits
The transition to Microsoft Fabric and Power BI unlocked a range of strategic and operational advantages for Westfield Insurance:
Enhanced Security: Established a secure VNet connection between Microsoft Fabric and Power BI, ensuring enterprise-grade data protection.
Improved Efficiency: Leveraged the Code Explorer AI tool to accelerate analysis workflows, reducing turnaround time from weeks to days.
Streamlined Reporting: Consolidated thousands of legacy reports, eliminating redundancy and improving clarity across business units.
Optimized Data Management: Rationalized and unified data models, reducing complexity and increasing reliability.
